You are walking into an F. W. Woolworth's store straight out of a child's imagination. It is a wonderful conglomeration of store merchandise, signage and fixtures that spans three decades, from the 1930's through the 1950's.

We show a corner of the Store, the Toy and Christmas Merchandise departments. More than a decades research and treasure-hunting have gone into the construction of this exhibit. Our intention is to honor Frank Woolworth and the tradition of Christmas Shopping at the "five and dime".

To a child, a trip to woolworth's offered a kaleidoscope of color, an overwhelming variety of merchandise - lights, decorations, gifts and toys - endless choices and possibilities.

Adults, more pragmeatic, appreciated the stores' meticulous displays and tidy organization; "a place for everything and everything in its place". Salesgirls were kept busy at Christmastime, continually restocking merchandise, filling empty spots quickly with merchandise from handy storage cabinets.

The display cases you'll see are the type used in some of the earliest Woolworth's. Some of these graced Woolworth's stores for more than 50 years.

The merchandise, of course, is not new. In order to evoke the nostalgia of the era vintage items were collected and assembled on our shelves and in our cases.

We hope this exhibit brings back warm childhood memories for those who once shopped at the "five and ten", and that it enlightens and enchants the younger generations who now shop malls and superstores.
